Girls In A ComaGenre: other Location: San Antonio, TX Visits: 4688 | Bio/Info: Girls in a Coma are a three piece all female group, who in the year and a half that they have been together, have already developed a big following, opened for Frank Black, and have already had a song covered by respected local band The Martyrs. They have been called the female Smiths and compared to Morrissey and The Pixies.
The path for these girls started in 1995-96 when Jenn (bass) and Phanie (drums) began playing clubs such as DMZ and Showcase, with Phanie playing guitar and Jenn on vox/bass. The band then split up at the end of '96 with the closure of both clubs. In '99, Nina(vox/guitar) took up an interest in guitar and was given brief lessons by Phanie, her older sister. At the end of 2000, Jenn and Phanie were speaking of starting up a band again, with the intentions of having Phanie on guitar and Jenn on bass. The search for a vocalist and drummer began.
In the meantime, Nina began developing songs and mastering her guitar. One afternoon, Jenn and Phanie discovered that their future front person was right under their nose. While on the patio, Nina decided to share one of her songs with the girls, entitled "Stolen". The girls were left amazed, and could not believe she had written such a passionate song. They immediately made Nina the vocalist. Having trouble finding a drummer, Phanie taught herself drums in less than a year, leaving Nina as the permanent guitarist. The lineup was complete. The girls then decided to name the band after their main influence, Morrissey and The Smiths, and called the band Girls in a Coma, after The Smiths' song "Girlfriend in a Coma". Their first show at Sin13 in 2001 left the audience in awe with Nina's jaw dropping vocals and the group's unique sound. Since then, they have continued to leave audiences in amazement everywhere and are gaining a wider and wider audience in every city they play.
"Music is in a depression, let us wake it up" - ironically, Girls in a Coma.
